Discussion:
Sentra--5th gear transmission problem?

My Sentra (1994) is making a LOUD droning noise when I drive. The noise
level increases the faster I drive.

My mechanic said that it was a 5th gear problem, and that my generation
Sentras often have such problem. He wants $900 to rebuilt the tranny--he
says a failure
would be "catestrophic".

Does this sound right?

Thanks.

Well then ignore him and just keep driving it until you prove him
wrong!! But in doing so, every time you drive this car, little bits of
metal are clogging small oil passages that lube the needle bearings and
ball bearings throughout your tranny. Then when it does SHATTER TO
PIECES you can buy a $50 used piece of junk and bolt it in. Think of the
money you will save.

Catastrophic would be to pay $900 for fixing an old car like this... :-)
I have 1994 sentra and I lost my 5th gear about a year ago.
It was slipping out of gear occasionally - at first.
Then it could not stay at 5th at all and I had to keep it there,
holding the shifter. Now, even holding the shifter there does not help.
The 5th gear simply does not work at all. Guess what - I do not care.
I just drive using 1, 2, 3 and 4. It is little louder and burns
a little more fuel, but the car is not worth the $900 tranny rebuild...
I could probably find a replacement transmission on the junkyard,
but most likely it would have the same 5th gear problem - very popular
with these sentra models.

Thanks to everybody but dumbass Randy.

I'll just run it until it dies.

Sentra SE-Rs (SR20DE 2 liter motor) had a problem, they would pop out of
gear while you were driving (some after a 100K miles or so, never saw it in
my 93 with 179K miles) I've heard of folks using a bungee cord to hold it
in 5th. I've not heard of a problem with the 1.6 liter motor's 5 speeds.

I had exactly that problem with 1.6 liter motor's 5 speeds.
It started to happen around 87000 miles and I could still hold
5th to drive but when I hit 100000 the 5th become unusable.
The car still has 4 working gears + reverse, so - no problem... ;-)

Skills for reducer selection
There are many kinds of reducers in the market while ach reducer has its own function. Different reducer is suitable for different industries, and the structure of different reducer is also different. Although the diversification of the reducers reflect technical retrofit and upgrade. But at the same time for buyers, choose a suitable reducer for their own industry is also slightly more important, because once you choose the wrong machine, it will bring d immeasurable damage, even worse, once there is an impact on work efficiency, it may bring more damage and a series of chain reactions. Thus, for the selection of the reducer, there is also a certain theoretical basis, as well as some skills. Here, the article will explain in detail for you to choose a suitable reducer and some skills.
Methods and Approach
The first step we go to buy a reducer, determining the purpose of our purchase. For the classifications of reducers in refinement, reducers can be divided into gear reducer, worm reducer, and so many small categories. But for us, we can change another way. Generally, we must first determine to buy imported reducers or domestic reducers, because, as different manufacturers, it has a set of their own definition. If we do not understand this, it may bring trouble to the following work.
Secondly, we should have a technical drawings of the reducer structure or the type of reducer. Because when we get the various parameters of the reducer, it can be better analysis the application suit for our production or not. Here, we need to have a wealth of theoretical knowledge on our understanding of the reference parameters to investigate. This requires a lot of accumulation, also need a certain amount of experience. Requires that we must continue to learn the technology, in the purchase of gear reducer, we must pay special attention to the daily maintenance and maintenance of gear reducer, regular use of gear box cleaning and maintenance machine can better help us to extend the service life of the reducers.
We need to understand some of the reducer parameters, what parameters need to know? Here will be a detailed explanation. What is the proofread of the thermal power of reducers? Is the temperature of the surrounding environment. This is one of the data we need to analyze, as a reducer, it should have a motor, how much is the exactly number of the motor, we need to do in-depth analysis. In addition, how is the safety factor of the reducer?, we can get a reliable guarantee or not? It is the most important thing, must not be ignored. There is the gear reducer on what equipment to use, and the use of it may be some of the results, but also absolutely not careless. We also need pay attention to the axial force and the axial force of the output shaft of the reducer.
China Shenzhen ZHAOWEI Machinery & Electronics Co. Ltd engages in designing, manufacturing and marketing all kinds of electric motors. They are mainly suitable for the following applications: smart home application used in smart kitchen and laundry, medical instrument for personal care, smart E-transmission applied in automobile, industry automation applied in telecommunication and a great variety of plastic/metal planetary gearbox in different sizes.
In order to develop the oversea market, we are current seeking new partners around the world to create a bright future together. ZhaoWei is a right choice and excellent partnership with sincere services.
